Industry Benchmarks
TL;DR
Benchmarks show median AgentReady™ scores by industry and CMS. Most industries average in the C range, but top performers in any vertical can reach B+ or higher. Use benchmarks to set realistic, competitive goals.

How Benchmarks Work#
AgentReady™ benchmarks are calculated from median scores across scanned sites within each industry category and CMS platform. Medians are used instead of averages to avoid distortion from outliers — a handful of extremely high or low scores do not skew the benchmark. Benchmarks are updated regularly as new scans are processed. They represent the current state of AI readiness in each category, not a fixed target. Your site is compared against the relevant benchmark in your scan results, giving you immediate context for your score. A score of 55 means something different in an industry where the median is 40 versus one where the median is 65. Visit How Scoring Works for full scoring details.
Top-Performing Industries#
Some industries have adopted AI readiness practices faster than others. Technology and SaaS companies tend to score highest, benefiting from technical teams that adopt structured data and AI protocols early. Media and publishing sites also perform well, driven by their reliance on content discoverability and established use of schema markup for articles. E-commerce sites with mature product catalogs often score above average thanks to detailed product schema and well-structured content. These industries share a common thread: they have clear business incentives tied to content discoverability, and they invest in technical infrastructure that overlaps with AI readiness requirements.
Industries with Room to Grow#
Several industries consistently score below the overall median. Local services and small businesses often lack structured data and run on templates with limited technical optimization. Healthcare and legal sites frequently block crawlers aggressively due to compliance concerns, triggering score floors that cap their potential. Financial services face similar constraints. Government and education sites tend to run on older CMS platforms with limited schema support. The good news for sites in these industries is that the low median creates opportunity. Even modest improvements can put you well ahead of industry peers. For a guided improvement path, see Your First Scan.
CMS-Level Benchmarks#
Your content management system affects your baseline AgentReady™ score. WordPress sites benefit from a large ecosystem of schema and SEO plugins but vary widely depending on theme and configuration. Shopify sites tend to have solid product schema out of the box but often lack article-level structured data and AI protocol support. Custom-built sites have the widest score range — from near-zero to best-in-class — depending entirely on implementation quality. Headless CMS architectures can achieve top scores when rendering and metadata are handled correctly, but they also risk low scores if server-side rendering or structured data is misconfigured. Understanding your CMS baseline helps you set realistic improvement targets and identify which fixes will have the largest impact.
Using Benchmarks to Set Goals#
Benchmarks are most useful as a goal-setting tool. Start by comparing your current score to your industry median. If you are below the median, focus on clearing floors and addressing the lowest-scoring factors. If you are at or above the median, shift your focus to earning bonuses and pushing into the next grade tier. A reasonable first goal for most sites is to reach one full grade above their industry median. For agencies managing multiple sites, benchmarks provide a consistent framework for prioritizing client work. See For Agencies for more on multi-site management.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often are benchmarks updated?
Benchmarks are recalculated regularly as new scan data is processed. They reflect the current state of AI readiness across industries, not a snapshot from a single point in time.
Can I see benchmarks for my specific niche?
Industry benchmarks are available at the category level. If your niche is a subset of a broader industry, the industry-level benchmark is the closest available comparison. Over time, more granular benchmarks may become available as scan volume grows.
Why is my CMS score different from the CMS benchmark?
CMS benchmarks reflect median scores across all sites on that platform. Your site may score higher or lower depending on your theme, plugins, custom configuration, and content quality. The benchmark shows what is typical, not what is predetermined.
