Authority & Trust
TL;DR
Authority & Trust (10% weight) evaluates external signals that indicate your site is a credible, established source. AI systems use these signals to decide which sources to cite when multiple options cover the same topic.

What It Measures#
The Authority & Trust factor assesses external signals that indicate your site's credibility and reputation. This includes the quality and diversity of your backlink profile — how many other reputable sites link to yours and in what context. It evaluates domain age and history, looking for a consistent track record of legitimate content. The factor also considers brand presence signals: whether your organization is mentioned on authoritative third-party sources, whether you have verified entity information (like a Google Knowledge Panel or Wikipedia presence), and whether your domain has a clean history free of spam or manipulation penalties. This is a site-level factor, not a page-level one. Your entire domain's reputation influences every page's authority score.
Why It Matters for AI#
AI systems face a trust problem. When generating answers, they must choose which sources to cite from potentially thousands of pages covering the same topic. Authority signals help AI systems make that choice. A page from a well-established domain with a strong backlink profile and recognized brand presence is more likely to be cited than an identical page from an unknown domain with no external validation. This factor was added in v2.0 of the algorithm because real-world testing showed that AI systems heavily weight authority signals in their citation decisions. At 10% of your total score, it rewards sites that have built genuine credibility over time. Sites with zero authority trigger a score floor. See How Scoring Works for the full model.
How to Check Yours#
Use SEO tools like Ahrefs, Moz, or Semrush to review your backlink profile. Look at the number of referring domains, the quality of those domains, and the diversity of link sources. Check whether your brand appears in any authoritative directories, industry publications, or reference sources. Search for your brand name to see how it appears in third-party contexts. Your AgentReady™ scan evaluates these authority signals and provides a summary assessment. Pay attention to the quality-to-quantity ratio of your backlinks — a few links from highly authoritative domains are worth more than hundreds from low-quality sources. Also check your domain history for any past penalties or spam-related issues that could affect your authority assessment.
How to Improve#
Authority is the hardest factor to improve quickly because it depends on external signals that accumulate over time. Focus on earning backlinks through genuinely useful content: original research, comprehensive guides, tools, and data that others naturally want to reference. Pursue press coverage and industry mentions through thought leadership and newsworthy activities. Ensure your organization has verified presence on relevant platforms: a complete Google Business Profile, industry directory listings, and social media profiles with consistent branding. Create and maintain author profiles on recognized platforms. If your domain is new, be patient — authority grows with time and consistent quality. For new sites, focus on the other factors first and let authority build naturally. Pair authority improvements with strong Content Quality and Topic Clarity to maximize the combined signal.
Common Authority Pitfalls#
Do not attempt to shortcut authority building with manipulative tactics. Purchased backlinks, link schemes, private blog networks, and other artificial link-building methods can damage your domain reputation and trigger penalties that are difficult to reverse. AI systems are increasingly sophisticated at detecting artificial authority signals. Focus on earning genuine citations by creating content worth referencing. A single mention in a respected industry publication is worth more than hundreds of links from low-quality directories. Similarly, do not confuse social media follower counts with domain authority. While social presence contributes to brand recognition, it does not directly substitute for the kind of external validation that backlinks and editorial mentions provide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a new domain ever score well on authority?
New domains will naturally score lower on this factor. However, a new domain that quickly earns legitimate backlinks and brand mentions can build authority faster than you might expect. Focus on creating link-worthy content from day one. The other 7 factors still carry 90% of the total score.
Does buying a high-authority expired domain help?
Not reliably. AI systems evaluate current authority signals in context. An expired domain with a strong backlink profile but completely different content will not retain its previous authority assessment. Authority must be relevant to your actual content.
How is this different from Topic Clarity?
Topic Clarity evaluates internal expertise signals on your own site: author credentials, topical depth, and E-E-A-T indicators. Authority & Trust evaluates external signals: what other sites and sources say about you through backlinks, mentions, and verified entity information.
